BIG Yellowfin Tuna

Howard flew in from Connecticut and joined us yesterday morning for a sunrise charter out of Puerto Los Cabos Marina, trading New England winter chill for glassy seas and cool Baja air. As the sun climbed over the mountains and lit up the Sea of Cortez, the crew set lines and began working offshore along one of our favorite tuna contours, where warm, nutrient-rich water pushes bait to the surface and draws in hungry fish. It did not take long before one of the trolling rods slammed down and the reel lit up, sending Howard straight into a full-body, shoulder-burning battle that had him braced at the rail and grinning in disbelief between runs.

For long stretches the tuna stayed deep, using its weight and the current to its advantage, while Howard followed the captain’s instructions, kept the line tight, and slowly gained precious yards of mono back onto the spool. Every pass closer to the boat brought more cheers from the crew, and when the fish finally came to color, that flash of silver and yellow below the surface turned excitement into pure adrenaline. A clean gaff shot ended the fight and the crew brought the tuna safely on deck, where the size of the fish really sank in and Howard realized he was looking at the biggest tuna of his life and a personal best he will be talking about back home in Connecticut for years.

A GRANDER MARLIN

Suzy and Mike decided to embark on an adventure to catch the marlin, a challenge they had both been dreaming of for years. They were overjoyed when they received an early Christmas present: a Grander Marlin. The sight of the majestic fish was breathtaking.

The day of the big catch arrived, and Suzy and Mike set out on their bigger boat, equipped with all the necessary gear. The anticipation was palpable as they ventured into the open sea. After hours of patiently waiting and strategically positioning lures, the crew finally spotted the marlin. It was a sight to behold—a massive, powerful creature slicing through the water with grace and speed.

The battle began as the marlin took the lure, and Suzy and Mike braced themselves for the fight of their lives. The marlin was a formidable opponent, putting up a fierce struggle that tested their strength and endurance. For over three hours, they fought tirelessly, their hearts pounding with adrenaline and determination. The marlin's powerful leaps and sudden dashes kept them on their toes, but they refused to give up.

Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the majestic fish succumbed to a heart attack during the intense battle. This tragic outcome is not uncommon in such high-stakes fishing scenarios, as the sudden surge of adrenaline and lactic acid buildup can be too much for the fish's heart to handle. Suzy and Mike were devastated by the loss of their prized catch, but they also felt a deep sense of respect and admiration for the marlin's strength and resilience.

The experience left a lasting impression on both of them. While the outcome was not what they had hoped for, the adventure had brought them closer together and reinforced their love for the sea and its wonders. They vowed to continue their fishing adventures, always with a deep respect for the marine life they encountered and a commitment to sustainable practices.

Marylou's Remarkable Tuna Fishing !

Marylou's fishing adventure at Gordo Banks was nothing short of legendary. The waters off San Jose del Cabo are renowned for their massive tuna populations, and she was determined to test her skills against the most challenging catch. When she encountered what seasoned anglers call a "cow" tuna - a yellowfin that could easily weigh over 120 lbs - she didn't hesitate.

Fighting the giant fish alone, Marylou demonstrated the kind of strength and technique typically seen in professional fishing tournaments. Her arms ached, her muscles strained, but she refused to give up. The massive tuna pulled hard against her line, creating a battle of wills between human and fish. Each moment was a test of endurance, skill, and pure determination.

The Gordo Banks are not for the faint of heart. These waters are known for producing some of the most challenging and rewarding fishing experiences in the world. Marylou moved with the confidence of someone who understood the sea, who respected its power, and who was ready to match its intensity. Her technique was impeccable - knowing when to give line, when to reel, and how to wear down the massive fish.

Hours passed, and the struggle continued. Our crew watched in awe as she fought her solitary battle, a lone angler against one of the most powerful creatures in the ocean. The tuna fought hard, making powerful runs that would have defeated a less experienced fisher, but Marylou held her ground. Her hands were raw, her back ached, but her spirit remained unbroken.

When she finally brought the massive tuna alongside the boat, it was more than just a catch - it was a triumph. Marylou had proven herself not just as a fisher, but as a true master of the sea. The "cow" tuna was a testament to her skill, her strength, and her unwavering determination. In the waters of San José del Cabo, she had written her own fishing legend.

SAILFISH !!!

Diane had an unforgettable fishing experience just after Tropical Storm Lorena passed.

As the waters, still stirred by the storm’s aftermath, settled close to Iman Bank, Diane engaged in an exciting battle with a sailfish. This powerful and agile fish was drawn to the nutrient-rich currents that the storm had recently stirred up. The setting was perfect: a drifting palm tree provided a natural refuge and an ideal hunting ground for the sailfish.

Armed with patience and her fishing rod, Diane skillfully handled the fight. Although the sea appeared calm on the surface, it held incredible energy that made every catch challenging and thrilling.

During the fight, the sailfish gave a spectacular blast, tail-dancing wildly on the top water surface, creating splashes and showcasing its strength and agility. Everyone was captivated by the raw power of the moment.

This catch at Iman Bank, following Lorena, became a memorable highlight, showcasing both nature’s resilience and Diane’s passion for fishing. It was more than just a catch, it was a true connection with the sea, echoing the waves still touched by the recent storm.
